Start with a problem that travels
The companies profiled in this package operate in very different sectors, but many began by addressing a problem that exists well beyond New Zealand: accounting administration, retail operations, farm management, digital giving, education access or industrial emissions. A local founder advantage can come from understanding a problem deeply, then testing whether the solution travels.
Build credibility before scale
International growth requires more than a compelling pitch. Customers need reliability, support, security and evidence that the product works in their environment. Regulated sectors such as finance, education and aerospace bring additional obligations. The strongest expansion stories are built on operational capability as well as ambition.
Capital, talent and networks matter
New Zealand founders often need to connect with international customers, investors and specialist talent while retaining strong local roots. That can create tension around where research, jobs, intellectual property and decision-making sit. The question is not simply whether a company goes global, but how it creates durable value for the people and communities that helped it begin.
