Your Expensive Sunscreen Isn’t Automatically Better. Here’s the SPF Question to Ask
As the New Zealand summer approaches, Consumer NZ's sunscreen information offers a reality check on SPF claims, testing and price.

Here is the mildly awkward thing about the bathroom shelf: the sunscreen that looks most luxurious is not necessarily the one giving you the best protection. The bottle can be chic, the scent can be gorgeous and the price can be startling. None of those things tells you how well its SPF claim stands up.
With summer approaching in Aotearoa, that is a question worth asking. Consumer NZ's sunscreen database, updated in October 2026, lets shoppers compare listed products by SPF, price and testing information. It is a far more useful starting point than whichever creator happens to have a sun-kissed brand partnership this week.
SPF isn't a luxury badge
SPF is a measure relating to protection against UVB radiation under test conditions. It does not mean a product protects you for an unlimited number of hours, and it does not make sunburn impossible. Application amount, reapplication, water exposure and other forms of sun protection still matter.
New Zealand has a legal sunscreen safety standard. But regulation and advertising are not magic. In 2025, Consumer NZ raised concerns after Australian testing reported that multiple sunscreens sold here had not met their labelled SPF claims. That finding should not be generalised to every sunscreen or every batch. It does justify expecting clear, current independent evidence behind protection claims.
Some products can also produce different test results at different laboratories. Rather than trying to turn one test into a tabloid verdict on an entire brand, we should be asking how testing is conducted, how often it is repeated and what happens when results conflict.
The questions to ask before paying up
- Is it a broad-spectrum product suitable for the activity you have planned?
- What does its most recent testing show, and when was that testing carried out?
- Are you comfortable using enough of it and reapplying as directed?
- If it is labelled water-resistant, have you checked what that actually means for swimming or sport?
Consumer NZ's buying guide is practical on these points. Protective clothing, shade and choosing when to be outside remain important. Sunscreen is part of the plan, not the whole plan.
The beauty industry's favourite trick
There is nothing wrong with wanting a product that sits beautifully under make-up. If the texture is pleasant, you may be more likely to use the right amount. The trick is when packaging starts to stand in for performance evidence.
We are not naming or condemning an untested product here. This is a consumer explainer, not a laboratory investigation conducted by The Zuardian. If a particular product concerns you, check the actual test record and the manufacturer's current information.

The expensive bottle may be wonderful. It just needs to earn your trust for reasons that have more substance than a good font.
