Solving the everyday retail problem

Vend developed cloud-based point-of-sale and retail management software for independent retailers. Its appeal was practical: help shop owners manage sales, inventory and customers without relying on disconnected systems. Founder Vaughan Rowsell became associated with the company’s growth from New Zealand into international markets.

The acquisition changed the story

In March 2021, Lightspeed announced an agreement to acquire Vend. The deal placed Vend’s retail product and customer base within a larger commerce platform. It is therefore more accurate to describe Vend as an Auckland-founded company acquired by Lightspeed than to imply it remains an independent start-up operating under its original ownership.

What founders can learn

A successful exit is not simply a headline valuation. It is also a question of product fit, customer retention, integration and what happens to the original product after the transaction. Vend is a useful New Zealand case study in building a specialised software product that becomes strategically valuable to a global platform.
